A 1950s and ’60s suburb inside Denver

Bear Valley grew in the 1950s and 1960s as Denver expanded west, and it was one of the city’s first suburban-style neighborhoods. It has winding streets and a lot of mid-century ranch and split-level homes, some of them on the rising ground north of the creek. The Bear Valley Improvement Association is more than 50 years old and isn’t an HOA. It runs park cleanups, a free summer concert and holiday events for the neighborhood.

• Bear Creek Park is a regional Denver park of about 90 acres along the creek. It has natural areas, ballfields, picnic shelters, the Sombrero playground and the Southwest YMCA. Denver adopted a vision plan for the park in 2023, and improvements are being built in phases.
• The Bear Creek Trail follows the creek along the neighborhood’s south side, west toward Morrison and east toward Englewood.
• The Bear Valley Shopping Center, at Hampden and South Sheridan, dates to the 1960s and is anchored by a grocery store and a home-improvement store.

Split-levels near the creek

Mid-century split-levels and ranches have their own cleaning patterns, and life near the creek adds some of its own:

1. Half-flights between levels. We vacuum each short run of stairs and wipe the railings, then finish each level’s floors in turn.
2. Lower-level family rooms. If you use a garden-level den, we keep carpets and baseboards on schedule so they don’t get dusty.
3. Seeds and leaves. Mature trees drop seeds and leaves in season, and they collect at doors and in window tracks.
4. Trail dogs. Dogs coming in off the Bear Creek Trail bring mud and hair. We concentrate on entry floors and the lower parts of doors.

Mid-century kitchens and baths

Many Bear Valley homes have been updated over the years, but some still have older cabinets, tile or fixtures. Older finishes can be more delicate, so we use gentle products on worn grout and aging chrome and clean cabinet faces by hand. If a room has been remodeled, tell us the materials, like quartz, natural stone or laminate, so we bring the right supplies.
