The Town of South Denver

Platt Park was part of the Town of South Denver, which incorporated in 1886, largely to keep out saloons and roadhouses. Its first and only mayor, Pennsylvania oilman James Fleming, built a stone house in 1882 on the block that is now the park. The estate included an orchard called Fleming’s Grove. In 1891, Fleming sold the property to the town, and the house became its town hall, jail and library. Denver annexed South Denver in 1894, and the Fleming Mansion stayed in use as a library until the Carnegie-funded Decker Branch Library opened on the park’s northeast corner in 1913. The Platt Park Senior Center was built between the two buildings in the 1970s.

The 4.4-acre park is named for James H. Platt, founder of the Platt Paper Company. The neighborhood name was first spelled “Platte Park,” with an “e,” and nobody is sure whether the difference was intentional.

Pearl Street and Broadway

• Old South Pearl Street has shops, cafés and restaurants mostly in the 1200 to 1500 blocks, and many of them occupy converted houses. Sushi Den has been on Pearl since 1984, and the street also hosts a weekend farmers’ market in season.
• South Broadway, on the western edge, has breweries, antique stores and restaurants.
• I-25 cuts across the northeast corner, and the Louisiana·Pearl light rail station sits along the highway nearby.

Bungalows, Tudors and pop-tops

Platt Park’s blocks mix older homes with additions and full rebuilds, so the cleaning plan depends on the house:

• Bungalows and Tudors. These older homes may have arched doorways, built-in shelves or smaller original bathrooms, all of which need detail work. We dust along the woodwork and clean tile carefully.
• Pop-tops and additions. If your home has had a second story added, there may be an upstairs suite with a large shower and double vanity. We give the glass and fixtures extra time.
• Alley garages and back doors. If you usually come in through the back, tell us, and the rear entry and mudroom will get as much attention as the front hall.
