Along the greenbelt

The neighborhood takes its name from Bear Creek, a tributary of the South Platte that starts high near Mount Blue Sky and flows through Evergreen, Kittredge, Idledale and Morrison before entering Lakewood. In Lakewood, the Bear Creek Greenbelt follows the creek from Wadsworth Boulevard west to Bear Creek Lake Park, a city-managed park of about 2,624 acres at the foot of the hogback. The park offers trails, fishing and boating, and the creek trail continues east toward Denver’s Bear Creek Park.

The creek has a long history as a gathering place. Early French traders called it Grand Camp Creek after a large encampment of several Native nations they found along its banks around 1815–1816.

The homes

According to the city plan, Bear Creek has a mix of housing types, including single-family homes and higher-density housing, and most of it was built in the 1980s and 1990s. That usually means:

• Two-story layouts with open great rooms. Tall walls and vaulted ceilings collect cobwebs, and big living areas make every footprint visible. We dust as high as we can safely reach and finish floors last.
• Townhome and condo communities. Shared driveways and guest parking need a plan. Tell us where our car can go and how to get into the building.
