Baker is a Denver neighborhood of about 955 acres, beginning roughly a mile south of Civic Center. It’s bounded by West 6th Avenue on the north, Broadway on the east, West Mississippi Avenue on the south and the South Platte River on the west. Its residential core sits north of Alameda, between Santa Fe Drive and Broadway, where hundreds of 19th-century brick houses still stand. The Cleanest House cleans Baker houses, condos and townhomes. Where Denver may have started

In the summer of 1857, a party of prospectors pulled placer gold from a spot on the South Platte roughly where West Virginia Avenue meets the river. The site became known as the Mexican Diggings, and it’s thought to be the first non-native settlement in what is now Denver, a year before the settlement at the Cherry Creek confluence. Mountain man James Beckwourth and William and Elizabeth Byers settled nearby in 1859. The first subdivision was platted along Santa Fe Drive in 1872, and more than 80 percent of the neighborhood had been built by 1900.

The part of Baker north of Alameda was annexed to Denver in 1883. The southern part belonged to the Town of South Denver until it was annexed in 1894. The neighborhood name dates only to the 1970s. It comes from Baker Junior High, now the Denver Center for International Studies at Baker, which was named for University of Colorado president James Hutchins Baker.

Historic blocks

• The Baker Historic District covers about 30 blocks in the northeast part of the neighborhood. It was designated locally in 2000, and most of the same area was listed on the National Register in 1985 as the South Side–Baker Historic District.
• Architect William Lang designed 39 buildings in the neighborhood.
• Individual Denver landmarks include the Coyle/Chase House at 532 W. 4th Ave., where playwright Mary Chase lived, and Fire Station No. 11 at 40 W. 2nd Ave.
• Small parks include Dailey Park at Ellsworth and Cherokee and Hector M. Flores Park at 4th and Galapago.
• Light rail stops at the Alameda and I-25 & Broadway stations.

Cleaning a Victorian-era brick house

Houses built in the 1880s and 1890s have their own quirks. Here’s what we plan for in Baker:

1. Tall ceilings and deep trim. Many older houses have high window casings, picture rails or tall baseboards, and all of them collect dust. We clean them in rotation so the whole room gets covered over a few visits.
2. Narrow stairs. If your staircase is steep and tight, it takes extra time. We vacuum each tread and wipe the handrail on every visit.
3. Old floors. Worn or refinished wood needs a damp mop, not a wet one.
4. Street and rail grit. Being close to Broadway, Santa Fe and I-25 means fine dust on sills and entry floors, so those get attention every visit.
