From airfield to neighborhood

Lowry Field became an Army Air Corps training post in 1938 on the grounds of the former Agnes Phipps Memorial Sanatorium. It was named for 2nd Lt. Francis Lowry, a Colorado pilot killed in combat in World War I. The base trained airmen through World War II and the Cold War, and from 1955 to 1958 it was the first home of the U.S. Air Force Academy. After it closed, Denver and Aurora formed the Lowry Redevelopment Authority to turn the land into a new community. Much of today’s Lowry is newer single-family homes, rowhomes and condo buildings, alongside some reused base buildings.

Newer construction brings its own cleaning needs:

• Open floor plans have fewer walls to hide clutter, so kitchens and living areas that flow together need steady upkeep to stay presentable.
• Rowhomes and townhomes are often three levels with stairs. Make sure we know how many floors and bathrooms you have.
• Big windows and modern finishes look best when each surface gets the right product and the glass is left streak-free.

Parks, museum and Town Center

The Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum fills a former hangar at 7711 E. Academy Blvd. Next to it, the roughly 50-acre Great Lawn Park is Lowry’s central green, with a large sundial and summer concerts, and Kelly Dam lies to its north. Smaller parks include Crescent Park, the Lowry Dog Park and the City of Ulaanbaatar Park, named in 2001 for Denver’s sister city in Mongolia. Lowry Town Center, which began construction in 2001, has shops and restaurants, and Lowry Beer Garden is a neighborhood gathering spot.

The old Lowry Firehouse is now Colorado Free University. The University of Northern Colorado runs a satellite campus here, and private schools in the area include Stanley British Primary School and Bishop Machebeuf High School. Dogs, strollers and school traffic all mean floors and entries do most of the work.
