Orchard Place, the Cherrelyn horsecar and Cinderella City
Englewood’s recorded history starts in 1858, when William Green Russell found gold near the mouth of what became Little Dry Creek. Thomas Skerritt, considered the city’s founder, settled here two years later in an area called Orchard Place. The Cherrelyn horsecar line opened in 1883. A horse pulled the car up Broadway, and gravity brought it back down. The town incorporated in 1903, and Swedish National Sanitorium, now Swedish Medical Center, was founded in 1905. After Englewood secured its own water supply in 1948, a building boom followed, and most of the city was built by 1960.
The Cinderella City mall opened in 1968 on the former City Park and was one of the largest malls in the country. It was later torn down for a transit-oriented CityCenter. The one remaining piece of the mall is now the Civic Center, which holds the library, the Museum of Outdoor Arts, city offices and the Englewood light rail station on the D Line, which opened in 2000.

Hampden Avenue and Broadway split central Englewood into four quadrants, and each one has a different kind of housing:
