Ted Hutchinson’s postwar ranches

A Denver city historic context report credits builder Ted Hutchinson with making University Hills south of Yale his first major project: about 2,200 homes finished between 1949 and 1955. North of Yale, he platted Hutchinson’s University Place in 1954, and the Plaza Heights subdivision followed next door. The result is streets of single-story ranch homes, many brick, with curving streets or T-intersections, deep front setbacks, backyards that meet, and no alleys. Some original ranches have since been replaced with larger new houses, and newer condo and apartment buildings are appearing along the main corridors.

For cleaning, that usually means:

• One-level routines. Kitchens, the main bath and hallways do most of the work in a ranch. We clean them thoroughly every visit.
• Front-door entries. With no alleys, most traffic comes through the front or the garage, so those floors get special attention.
• Additions and rebuilds. Expanded homes may have second floors or extra baths. Tell us the current layout, not the original one.
