Lakewood is the most populous city in Jefferson County and, at 155,984 people in the 2020 census, the fifth-largest city in Colorado. It runs from the Denver line west to the hogbacks, with Green Mountain rising 6,854 feet in the west-central part of town. A city that grew up before it incorporated

Charles Welch and W.A.H. Loveland platted the first 13 blocks along Colfax Avenue in 1889, and a Lakewood post office opened in 1892. The city itself wasn’t incorporated until June 24, 1969. It was briefly named Jefferson City, and more than 90,000 people already lived here. Lakewood never had a traditional downtown. West Colfax, the old U.S. 40 route to the mountains, filled with motels, shops and car lots. Later the Villa Italia Mall on West Alameda was torn down and replaced by Belmar. The Denver Federal Center is here too, and so are three colleges: Colorado Christian University, Red Rocks Community College and Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.

That long, unplanned growth is why Lakewood housing varies so much from one block to the next. Older streets near Colfax often have small post-war houses. The south and west neighborhoods filled in with ranches, bi-levels and two-stories from the 1960s through the 1990s. Townhomes and condos cluster near Belmar and the W Line light rail. The 2010 census counted 65,758 housing units, and a big share of them are the kinds of homes we clean.

Lakewood has a cold, semi-arid climate, and it shows up on floors and windowsills. Here’s what we plan for in Lakewood homes:

1. Trail and park dirt. Bear Creek Lake Park, Green Mountain and the greenbelts get a lot of use. Hiking boots and bike tires bring fine grit into entries and garages.
2. Dry-air dust. Low humidity makes dust settle quickly on blinds, ceiling fan blades and baseboards. We rotate those tasks so none of them sit for months.
3. Split-level stairs. If your home is a bi-level or tri-level, those short flights of stairs collect pet hair on every step. They’re vacuumed each visit.
4. Townhome kitchens. Compact kitchens near Belmar get heavy daily use, so we degrease the counters, backsplash and stovetop every time.

For ongoing care, book residential cleaning. We recommend biweekly. Weekly and every-four-weeks visits are also available, but every three weeks is not an option. If an occupied home needs to be caught up first, start with a deep cleaning. For an empty house or condo before a sale or move-in, book move-in/out cleaning.
