Gold, celery and the first supermarket
On June 22, 1850, Lewis Ralston, a Georgia prospector on his way to California, found a small amount of gold in a creek near Clear Creek. It was the first documented gold discovery in the Rocky Mountain region. The spot is now in Arvada’s Gold Strike Park, on what is now Ralston Creek. Benjamin Wadsworth and Louis Reno platted a townsite along the new Colorado Central Railroad in 1870. It was soon named Arvada, after Hiram Arvada Haskin, the brother-in-law of settler Mary Wadsworth. The town incorporated in 1904. Its farms were watered by 42 irrigation ditches, and Arvada called itself the “Celery Capital of the World.” In 1947, Lloyd J. King opened Colorado’s first supermarket at West 57th Avenue and Webster Street. Arvada grew quickly after World War II and passed 100,000 residents by 2000.
Arvada homes by era
Arvada is mostly residential, with light industry and offices. Its main shopping streets are Wadsworth Boulevard, Ralston Road and Kipling Street. Depending on the area, homes range from older houses near Olde Town to post-war ranches and split-levels to newer, larger two-story homes. Townhomes and condos are mixed in throughout. The 2010 census counted 44,427 housing units. Here’s how home age affects our work:
- Older houses near Olde Town: smaller rooms, older tile and narrow stairs. We work carefully around original finishes.
- Mid-century ranches and split-levels: long hallways, several levels, and basements used as family rooms. We plan the stairs and lower levels into every visit.
- Newer west-side two-stories: bigger kitchens, lofts and several bathrooms. On these homes, bathrooms take the most time.
Open space and daily life
The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge and Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge are all local draws. In 2014 the League of American Bicyclists named Arvada a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community, and its trail network gets a lot of use. The RTD G Line has three stops in the city: Arvada Ridge, Olde Town Arvada and 60th & Sheridan/Arvada Gold Strike. Trail and bike traffic means more grit and dried mud than you might expect by the back door and in the garage. We add those areas to the checklist.
How to book
We offer recurring residential cleaning and recommend a biweekly schedule. Weekly and every-four-weeks visits also work, but every three weeks isn’t available. If the home needs a first reset, book a deep cleaning while you’re living there. If it’s empty before a sale or move, book move-in/out cleaning. We can’t guarantee deposit refunds or inspection results.
We use non-toxic cleaning products that are lower-fume and mild-scented. They are not chemical-free, and we make no medical claims. Olde Town shops and Arvada offices can book commercial cleaning month-to-month, quoted for any size. Extras like blinds and appliances are listed on additional services. We don’t offer same-day or rush cleaning.
