A young city with established neighborhoods
Centennial only became a city on February 7, 2001. Residents voted on September 12, 2000, with 77% in favor, to incorporate parts of unincorporated Arapahoe County, including the former Castlewood and Southglenn census-designated places. More than 100,000 people lived in the area, so at the time it was the largest incorporation in U.S. history. One big reason was to stop Greenwood Village from annexing more land. The name honors Colorado, the “Centennial State,” which joined the Union in 1876. Voters made Centennial a home-rule city in 2008.
The city is new, but since more than 100,000 people already lived here in 2000, much of the housing is older than the city itself.
